About Project

Acorn were appointed to build an L-shaped single storey rear extension to this early Edwardian house, as well as to carry out numerous internal alterations and refurbishments. We are really proud of the very interesting and unique home, reflecting our clients’ personal styles, that this successful collaboration achieved.

The extension added a new family room and extra kitchen space, as well as a separate utility room. The extension has two large new flat roof lights, as well as new steel-framed glass screens and doors. A new steel-framed glass door with interesting reeded glass also separates the utility room from the kitchen.

The new kitchen was painstakingly hand-built by a clients’ friend, with whom we worked very closely. A walk-in larder cupboard was a key feature of the new kitchen. We hand-painted the kitchen, which includes interesting contrasting colours. Hardwood worktops were fitted to the kitchen and utility room. At one end of the extension, an original brick party wall was exposed and refurbished. At the other end, a new yellow London stock brick wall was built.

The new kitchen is provided with new fibrous plaster cornices, reconstructed from mouldings taken from the front room of the house. The extended ground floor of the house is finished with carefully selected stained oak plank flooring. The front door area was fitted with Victorian-style tiling.

Upstairs, the bathroom was completely refurbished, including the re-finishing of an old bath, the installation of various period features and a feature facing brick wall.

Wet underfloor heating was provided to the new extension. Electric underfloor heating was installed to the refurbished bathroom.

Externally, a new slate patio was installed across the whole rear of the house, with facing brickwork and slate steps leading to the garden’s upper level, which features two areas of hardwood decking and an interesting cobbled planted area. New slatted fencing has been fitted to both boundaries.
