About Project

Acorn Construction are proud to have delivered this gorgeous rear extension with internal alterations in Eltham.

The project provides a large and light kitchen & dining area, with a new utility room and toilet, along with extensive redecoration and finishing works through much of the house. The extension was built from reclamation yellow stock bricks with aluminium sliding doors and a matching roof lantern.

The specification included underfloor heating and Amtico flooring throughout the main room area. The boiler was relocated into the new utility room. The toilet included lovely marble flooring with Victorian-style sanitaryware. The hall floor was laid with black and white Victorian tiles.

Externally, the project included the construction of a new granite-tiled terrace with a metal handrail & balustrades above a steeply sloping back garden.

This project was interestingly carried out as a mirror-image project with an extension and loft project for the immediate neighbour. The two projects carried out together were a major joint endeavour for Acorn in 2019 / 2020.

Colin and his Team did a high quality job on our loft conversion and rear extension. It was a long project, with the loft conversion undertaken first, followed by the rear extension including a new kitchen, but we were able to continue living in the house with 2 young children throughout thanks to how it was managed. A temporary kitchen was set up for us in the loft whilst the new one was installed and this exceeded our expectations in terms of our ability to continue to have access to a dishwasher, washing machine and cooking facilities etc.We effectively started with an idea of what we wanted but no plan as to how to achieve it - Colin guided us through the process, putting us in contact with a local architect and staying involved throughout.Once the work started, Colin was very responsive to any issues and got these quickly resolved.The end result was excellent and we are very pleased with how it all looks.

We used Acorn to build our loft and extension because we were very impressed with the work they did for our neighbours and they didn’t disappoint. Paul and his team were superb. From start to finish they provided us with a brilliant, professional service and the finish of the end product is to a high standard.Paul was very accommodating and extremely patient with all our questions . When there were concerns or issues they rectified them in a timely manner. Paul and his team were very good at problem solving be it to address unforeseen issues arising during the project or coming up with cost saving solutions that still met the project’s standards.All the workman were very professional, hard working and polite.During the extension phase Acorn set up a temporary kitchen in our 1st floor spare bedroom where we could still cook, wash up and do laundry. Having our washing machine and fridge moved into this temporary kitchen made the whole extension phase a lot more easy to cope with.Renovation is a daunting prospect. We are very lucky to have had Paul and his team to help us navigate through the process. We thoroughly recommend them to anyone who is thinking of embarking on this journey to their dream home.

We had our entire home (including driveway and patio) renovated and cannot recommend Acorn (Colin, Ting and their team) strongly enough. We extended into the loft and opened up and out the back of our house. Acorn did the building work on a loft extension and refurbishment project at our house in SE London. For us it was a big undertaking, which involved work over several months. We were very pleased with the end result, which achieved what we had hoped at the outset. Technical challenges encountered along the way were discussed and managed between ourselves, Acorn and the architect in a way that produced very good solutions. Acorn personnel were friendly and very good to deal with, and the managers were contactable, responsive and usually quick to come back to us, something which was very important to us as the project progressed. In our view the quality of the workmanship was very good throughout, and where there were options to be considered/choices to be made along the way, these were discussed and agreed with us in a way we found very helpful. Costs throughout were as quoted, with any variations due to change in specification agreed in a timely and transparent way. We would go back to Acorn for other work we might have in future, and are very happy to recommend them.

Colin, Paul and the Acorn team transformed a rather unloved terraced house that had been a HMO into a wonderful home full of light and space.We had full confidence in the whole process, from the initial contact with and discussions between our architects and Colin and Paul, all the way through to dealing with our amendments and "extras" once the main build was completed. Everyone of the Acorn team took great pride in their work, as well as terrific care of our home.Since we moved back in at the end of June 2018, Colin and Paul have ensured everything is just as we want it, including a thorough 12-month check of the house and working effectively and efficiently - and economically! - to complete subsequent requests from us since the build.Thanks to everyone at Acorn we have a wonderful home, and we really couldn't think more of all you've done for us!

We contracted Acorn in 2018 as a single contractor to manage a domestic extension to our Victorian, detached family home in SE12 - comprising of a single-story ground floor extension and a double story in-fill of circa 60 sqm. Ultimately this became a full whole-house renovation with landscaping, completed to an exceptional standard and sympathetic to the heritage of the house.I can fully recommend Acorn for this type of work.The quality of the finishing and attention to detail throughout was excellent. Colin’s (owner / main contact) communication was well structured from the quote stage until sign off and his team were professional and courteous throughout. They demonstrated patience with our specific requests and were willing to think creatively. Examples:• Acorn’s quote: In contrast to competing quotes which used the simplistic template provided to them, Acorn created a bespoke, more detailed, full itemized quote which allowed for a better discussion /negotiation than their peers. This was an immediate indicator of their enhanced professionalism.• Clear communication: particularly as a novice, this was key. Acorn kept us up to date with progress on a weekly basis and their written and verbal communication was clear and they helpfully provided clear guidance. Where unexpected items arose, they informed us of these immediately and worked with us to find a suitable and reasonable solution.• Of note – we had originally planned to live in the property for the duration of the renovation – setting up a temporary kitchen in another part of the house etc. Colin was clear with us that this was possible, and he was very happy to work on this basis but with a young family it would be very stressful - we ultimately decided to rent elsewhere for a period. This advice was given whilst still tendering and other competing bid were far more flippant (not wishing to compromise getting the order). In retrospect it would have been a disaster to stay in the house and this conversation helped us to make the right decision. Candidness upfront on this and other issues saved pain further down the line• Modified the original plans to achieve a combined brick / exposed steel finishing.• They provided numerous options for cost savings where the initial plan could be modified.• When we uncovered an unknown cellar, they found an elegant solution for the opening hatch which ensured it became an interesting feature whilst maintaining the neat continuity of the parquet flooring• Installed a Victorian tiled hall floor with a fine and detailed finish• Their handling of suppliers was great and avoided the need for us to get involved with every aspect of the build.• They had an extensive list of recommended suppliers for all fixtures and fittings which was a helpful guide but also were able to manage the all the other suppliers we selected.• Management building control’s onerous requirements very wellRenovation can be stressful and challenging process, so it is important to select the right partner with whom you can develop an understanding - If you are considering a domestic extension and wish to achieve an excellent build I can recommend Acorn.

We could not recommend Acorn Construction more highly. Our experience has been pain free with the most professional, helpful, and caring contractors we could have hoped for. They gave us a spectacular and better than we could have hoped for finish on our extension. Our project manager was Colin Forrest, who was always on the end of the phone with advice, helpful information and often going over and above the call of duty. Acorn were excellent from start to finish. Work was complete on time and to the agreed budget. In several places, changes and improvements to the original plans were suggested and carried out to create more space at either no cost, or for an extra amount which was reasonable and agreed in advance. Colin and Paul have never quibbled about anything that I've asked them to do or change, and they have followed up on the inevitable snagging points even several months after the job was completed. Due to the high quality of their work, we ended up doing a lot more than we originally planned, and I always felt the cost for these extra was fair. Having heard horror stories of many builders, I was initially very sceptical of what they promised, but they delivered in full. Highly recommended!! Dave
