Acorn were selected to build a two-storey side extension and a single storey rear extension to this Edwardian house, as well as to carry out extensive internal alterations and refurbishments. The result is a stunning family home that looks fabulous. We are very proud to have been a part of the project.
The two-storey extension added a new family room and a fifth bedroom, as well as enabling the construction of an en-suite shower room to the master bedroom, interestingly several steps lower than the bedroom. The single storey extension provides a new dining area, illuminated by two new flat roof windows, which allowed the kitchen area to be enlarged. In the course of this work, an unknown original basement was found, which was turned into a new storage space, with steps down from the kitchen floor through a concealed floor access door.
Both extensions feature new steel-framed glass screens and doors. The new kitchen is hand built shaker-style with new integrated appliances and a quartz worktop. The new dining room is enclosed with new feature yellow stock brick walls.
Internally, the original central chimney stack was removed, allowing the family bathroom to be moved to the middle of the house, creating a new larger rear bedroom. The window to this bedroom, having been horribly modified at some point in the past, was reconstructed to its original shape, re-using the original flat brick arch window head. The side and rear windows were replaced with new sliding sash windows.
The ground floor was generally provided with new oak herringbone parquet flooring. The hall was finished with black & white Victorian-style diamond pattern floor tiling. New fibrous plaster cornices were fitted to most of the refurbished rooms. Substantial new period-style skirting boards, architrave and picture rails were fitted in all the rooms. Acorn built several new fitted wardrobes in the bedrooms.
Externally, a new sandstone patio was installed across the whole rear of the house, with an interesting timber and steel wire pergola structure.
